The Italian beef sandwich originated in Chicago in the 1930s. It features thinly sliced seasoned roast beef, simmered and served in au jus on top of hearty Italian-style rolls. The bread itself is then, at the discretion of the customer, dipped or double-dipped in the au jus to add additional moisture to the meat and bread.
The Italian beef sandwich has several potential toppings. The most common topping is giardiniera, an Italian relish of pickled vegetables. The sandwiches can also be topped off with sautéed, green Italian sweet peppers. Depending on whether you pick the form or the latter, the topping will provide a spicy or sweet tang to the sandwich respectively.
